It's tough to move to a new neighborhood, school, city, state, or country, leaving your friends behind. The transition can be eased, however, with some strategies that help form new relationships and connections. Read on to learn how to make friends when you move.

Introduction
- Even if you're moving with your family, you'll want to make friends in your new home. Be open and welcoming, get involved, and volunteer to help others. You'll always have your old friends, but soon you'll have a new circle of friends as well.
Step 1: Adjust Your Attitude
- In order to meet new people, you'll need to be approachable. Focus on the good things about your move, keep a smile on your face and make eye contact when walking around your new surroundings. People are attracted to positive, happy people.
- Be friendly, making sure to smile and see hello when walking in your neighborhood.
- Be open and nice when meeting someone new.
- Have a few conversation topics planned in advance, to take advantage of chance meetings.
- Ask for help finding a dentist, plumber or electrician. It makes people feel good to be of assistance.
Step 2: Reach Out
- Staying in your house or apartment won't help you meet people, and you need to meet alot of people in our to find the few that you will continue to form a deeper relationship with.
- Take walks around your neighborhood, with a pet if possible. Pets are great conversation starters.
- Join a club or organization. This will help you meet people with similar interests.
- Take a community education class.
- If you're religious, joining a church can be a great way to meet people who share your outlook and values.
Step 3: Volunteer
- Working together on a common cause is a great way to form bonds that can lead to friendships.
- Start slowly by participating in a neighborhood clean up day.
- Find a cause you're passionate about, and sign on with a local group.
- If you have children, joining the PTO and volunteering in the school will create instant connections.
