Step 1: Create a Clip
To get started, you will need a clip of music to make your ringtone with. If you do not already have any songs on your iPhone, you will want to go to the iTunes store and find one. Some are available for free--you just need to look around a bit to find one that you like.
- Once you have a song downloaded, you may begin making the clip. To do this, go to iTunes from your phone. Select a song, and click Get Info. Then, go to Options and use the Start Time and Stop Time boxes to select the length of your ringtone (must be under 30 seconds).
Step 2: Encode your Clip
- Click on your new song clip
- Choose Convert Selection to AAC
- Go to step 3 if you have done this successfully
- If you don't have the above as a menu option, go to Preferences
- Click Advanced
- Click Importing
- Choose "'AAC Encoder from the drop down menu
Step 3: Get the Ringtone
- Drag the new song clip from your iTunes folder to your desktop
- Go back to your iTunes library and delete the original clip
- Right-click the desktop click
- Choose Get Info
- Change the name of the file extension from .m4a to .m4r
- Double-click on the newly named file
- Add it to your ringtones library
