How to Make Fondant Zebra Stripes

Do you want to learn how to make fondant zebra stripes? Fondant zebra stripes are fabricated from tinted shades of fondant, a sweet paste made of confectioner’s sugar, shortening, and water. The paste is thick and creamy in texture, allowing for it to be sculpted into a variety of figures. Once dry, the fondant becomes solid and is able to hold its shape.

The zebra stripes are created with white and black fondant, cut into triangular pieces and arranged around the cake. The fondant used to create the pattern can be homemade or prepackaged. The process is simple to follow, although some caution should be taken when cutting the pieces. Read on to learn how to make fondant zebra stripes.

Step 1: Gather the Materials to Make Fondant Zebra Stripes

To create fondant zebra stripes, you will need:

  • White Fondant
  • Black Fondant
  • Buttercream Icing
  • Prepared Cake
  • Fondant Smoother
  • Palette knife

Step 2: Apply a Base to the Cake

  1. Cover your prepared cake in the buttercream icing
  2. Apply a light dust of confectioner’s sugar to the working mat.
  3. Knead the fondant, until it has a soft, pliable, consistency.
  4. Use the rolling pin to roll out the white fondant to the appropriate size of your cake. As you roll the fondant, lift it from the working surface to prevent it from sticking.
  5. Roll the fondant onto the rolling pin.
  6. Unroll it onto the cake, and position it so that the entire cake’s surface is covered.
  7. Use the fondant smoother, moving from the center of the cake down, to smooth out any uneven spots in the fondant, and to secure it to the cake.
  8. Trim off the excess fondant around the bottom of the cake. http://www.wilton.com/decorating/fondant/rolled-fondant.cfm

Step 3: Roll Out the Black Fondant

  1. Cover your work surface in a light dust of confectioner’s sugar
  2. Roll the black fondant out onto the surface, lifting the fondant from the surface after every few rolls to prevent it from sticking.
  3. Continue rolling the fondant in every directions, until it is thin and has an oblong shape.
  4. Use the pizza cutter to cut long strips out of the black fondant. Allow the pizza cutter to travel freely, so that the lines are uneven. Set the strips aside.

Step 4: Attach the Stripes to the Cake

  1. Apply a light coat of water to the area around the side of the cake.
  2. Start by picking up the strips of fondant in the center of the piece.
  3. Attach the strip to the cake, beginning from the bottom, moving up the side, and into the center of the cake.
  4. Smooth the fondant along the side of the cake.
  5. Use the palette knife to mark the excess fondant and cut it from the bottom of the cake.
  6. Gently slide the palette knife under the strip of fondant on the top of the cake.
  7. Mark and cut away any fondant past 2 to 3 inches into the top of the cake. Do not discard the cut pieces, but sit them aside for later.
  8. Move to the opposite end of the cake and repeat with the next largest piece of fondant, continuing until all four sides of the cake have a large piece of fondant attached.
  9. Cut the remaining strips diagonally with the pizza cutter, so that you have a series of triangular pieces. The diagonals do not have to be evenly cut.
  10. Attach the triangles to the cake, moving around the larger pieces, and attaching some with their points facing upwards and others downward.
  11. Place the cake board into the center of the cake.
  12. Use the palette knife to cut the black strips of fondant using the board as a guide.
  13. Lift the board and remove the excess fondant.
  14. Secure the top portions of the fondant to the cake by gently lifting them and applying a light coat of water with the dampened brush.
  15. Top the cake with another layer, or adorn it with a fondant figure.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJoGKtopx3ohttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2hyY7vuhvo&feature=related
