This recipe for flour tortillas is very easy to make and tastes delicious. It makes eighteen 8 inch flour tortillas. The prep time is 30 minutes and the cook time is approximately 45 minutes.
Step 1: What You Need to Make Flour Tortillas
Flour Tortillas Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1 cup lukewarm water
Equipment
- Mixing bowl
- Cast iron or non-stick skillet
- Wooden spoon or hands
- Sifter
- Rolling pin
Step 2: Make the Dough
- Sift flour, salt, and baking powder in a mixing bowl.
- Add shortening and mix with your hands until shortening is very well distributed.
- Add lukewarm water, and blend well.
- Turn out on a lightly floured board and knead about 50 strokes.
- Divide in 18 pieces, roll into balls, and replace in bowl.
- Cover and let stand in a warm place to rest for 15 minutes.
Step 3: Roll and Cook the Tortillas
- Roll each ball out into a circle approximately 8" in diameter.
- Cook until lightly browned in slightly greased skillet.
- Tortillas may be kept uncooked in refrigerator for several days. Separate with sheets of waxed paper, to prevent them sticking to each other.
