Fourth of July Cake: Adding Fondant Stripes to Flag
This video demonstrates how to cut, transfer, and attach stripes to a white fondant flag. While this demonstration is for a cake sized flag, this same technique could be applied to smaller cupcake sized fondant flags as well. The fondant is cut and lifted carefully, then applied to the white layer with a bit of water.

Step 1: How to Make a Cupcake Flag
- There are many variations on flag cupcakes. These instructions will show you how to arrange a mass of cupcakes to join together to become a cupcake flag that is a great summer centerpiece, as well as a tasty dessert.
What You'll Need for a Cupcake Flag
- 48 unfrosted cupcakes
- White frosting
- A spatula or butter knife to use to frost the cupcakes
- A large, flat work surface to decorate the cupcakes
- 11/2 cup of strawberries, sliced
- 1/2 cup of blueberries
- A tray or platter large enough to hold the cupcakes
Instructions for a Cupcake Flag
- Frost cupcakes with white frosting
- Arrange cupcakes in 6 rows of eight cupcakes each.
- Place approximately 20 blueberries on the 12 cupcakes in the four by three rectangle in the top left corner of the flag.
- Cover the top half of the remaining cupcakes with sliced strawberries, creating stripes.
Step 2: Flag Cupcake Tips
- Cupcakes can be baked ahead and frozen. Thaw completely before frosting.
- Substitute colored sprinkles for the fruit to make a quick and easy cupcake flag.
- Red licorice and tiny wild blueberries can be used to create flags on individual cupcakes.
- If you're cooking for a smaller group, consider using miniature cupcakes to create a smaller cupcake flag.
