Naturally you want to begin by gathering your materials together. Set up a craft area by using an old tablecloth or shower curtain to cover a table. This will prevent any worry over spills or messes! Now, get together some construction paper, scissors, glue, tempera paint, tissues, painting supplies, baby oil, yarn, paper plates and newspaper.

In this video, Karen Weisman from Expert Village demonstrates how to make a pumpkin for a children's Halloween party. She uses a toilet paper roll, bright orange cloth, some twisted paper towel and a pipe cleaner to make a high quality decorative pumpkin that can be placed anywhere in your home.
Step 1: Masks
First things first. Every child needs to have a mask. Make masks by making designs on paper plates, then threading some yarn through the sides to tie the mask on with! Don't forget to cut holes for the mouth and eyes! Use some of the tips below to help the kids get really creative.
- Let the kids get creative and add some feathers to the top for an Indian.
- Cut the plate in half to make a "masquerade" tupe of mask.
- Glue half circles around the top of the plate to create ears for animal masks.
- Help kids to draw in eyebrows and mouths to create a more dramatic mask that has expresion.
Step 2: Ghosts
Make ghosts to hang around the house by stuffing tissues with small bits of newspaper, then tying a string around the middle to create a head. Children can personalize their ghosts by adding glitter or drawinf faces on them with a marker. Don't forget to leave some string to hang the ghost by!
Step 3: Mobiles
Make mobiles by hanging small Halloween shapes from a decorated paper plate. For example, you might cut and decorate the plate as a ghost and then make several small pumpkins to hang from it! Read the tips below for more ideas on mobiles.
- Make a witch on a broomstick by stufing black tissue paper with tissue or newspaper, then placing the "body" on a bamboo skewer.You might also use part of a skewer to help her sit upright on the broom. Add some straw at the end of the skewer for a broomstick effect. Make her hat out of a rolled piece of black paper. Once the witch is complete, hang cut out bats and cats from her broomstick.
- Turn your paper plate into a pumkin and hang unused pumkin seeds from it.
Step 4: Oil Designs
For the grand finale in your Halloween decorating frenzy, it's time to play with the baby oil! Put some baby oil in a bowl and have the children paint creepy designs with it on construction paper. Hold it up to a light and you can see the oil designs! This is a great way to dress up an old lampshade with a Halloween decoration!
