Introduction
Croutons can be large or small, plain or seasoned, and sweet or savory. They are only as good as the bread they are made of, however. Use top quality bread, and make sure it's at least two days old, so you have firm crispy croutons. Plan on 1 slice of bread per serving.
Step 1: What You Need to Make Croutons
- Bread, with crusts removed
- 2 teaspoons of butter or olive oil per slice of bread
- 1 clove of garlic, pressed
- Salt and pepper, as desired
Step 2: Saute the Croutons
- Cut the bread into 1/2 inch cubes
- Melt the butter, or heat the olive oil, in a skillet.
- Add the garlic, salt, and pepper
- Toss the bread cubes in the butter or oil, and fry over medium heat until golden.
Step 3: Bake the Croutons
- Preheat the oven to 350 F.
- Melt the butter in a small saucepan
- Combine the garlic, salt, and pepper with softened butter.
- Brush the bread with the garlic mixture.
- Slice the bread into 1/2 cubes and spread on a cookie sheet.
- Bake for 10 minutes, or until brown
