How To Make Coffee Drinks

Want to learn how to make iced and hot coffee drinks, like lattes, cappuccinos, frappuccinos, mochaccinos and more? This guide will show you how to make coffee drinks at home -- no machine required!

If you want to impress your friends and family with your prowess in the kitchen, making coffee drinks is an excellent way to do it. Iced drinks are the easiest, as you will not need to steam any milk. To start whipping up hot drinks, practice the basic latte and cappuccino and then expand to incorporate different flavors.

Hot Drinks

The vast majority of hot coffee drinks start out as a latte (coffee with a lot of steamed milk and foam), cappuccino (coffee with less steamed milk and foam), or a cafe au lait (coffee with hot milk). Use one of these as your base, and than add flavorings, which are listed in the third section below.

Roughly, a 1 1/2 ounce shot of espresso or 3 ounces of regular coffee should be used in each serving, with anywhere from 3 to 10 ounces of milk. A 1 to 1 1/2 ounce shot of flavored syrup or liquor per drink is plenty. Pour coffee first, then flavoring/liquor, then hot milk, and spoon steamed milk on top.

Here's how to steam milk without an espresso machine:

  1. Pour cold milk (the colder the better) into a saucepan
  2. Turn heat to medium high
  3. Whisk milk vigorously until foamy
  4. Do not let milk come to a boil

Cold Drinks

To make a cold coffee drink, you need is coffee, milk, ice and flavoring. You will also want a cocktail shaker to get a good mix. You can use the same coffee/milk/flavoring proportions outlined above. Iced drinks usually taste best when they are on the sweeter side, so if you don't have any flavored syrup it is a good idea to add some sugar.

  • To make an iced coffee drink:
  1. Fill your cocktail shaker with ice
  2. Add coffee, milk, and all other ingredients
  3. Place cap on shaker
  4. Shake vigorously
  5. Remove cap
  6. Pour contents of the shaker into your glass

For blended coffee drinks:

  1. Fill the glass you will be drinking out of with ice
  2. Pour in coffee, milk, and flavorings
  3. Pour entire contents of your cup into a blender
  4. Blend until smooth
  5. Pour back into cup

Step 3: Flavoring Options

  1. Flavored syrups, such as almond, chocolate, mint or vanilla
  2. Vanilla soy milk
  3. Irish cream
  4. Grand Marnier
  5. Kahlua
  6. Cinnamon for topping
  7. Ground chocolate for topping
