How to Make Classic Maryland Crab Cakes

Ingredients and Equipment

  • 1 lb jumbo lump crabmeat
  • 1 1/4 cups fresh breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise  
  • 1 1/2 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 1/2 tsp Old Bay seasoning
  • 1 tsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tbsp flat-leaf parsley
  • 2 lemon wedges
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/4 kosher salt 
  • Large skillet

Step 1: Prepare Crab Mixture

  1. Combine mayonnaise, mustard, bay seasoning, egg, Worcestershire sauce and lemon juice in bowl. 
  2. Pour mixture into bowl of crabmeat and stir together.
  3. Using your fingers, crumble the crab.
  4. Add in breadcrumbs and parsley and mix.
  5. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for one to three hours to let the flavors sit.

Step 2: Fry Crab Cakes

1. Remove crab mixture from refrigerator.

2. Set burner to medium heat. Add oil and butter to skillet.

3. Using your hands, mold crab mixture into eight small balls. 

4. Cook for four minutes on each side.
