Candy corn is a traditional autumn treat, and is a favorite among both kids and adults. This guide will show you how to make candy corn at home, so that you can delight your family and friends with these sweet treats. This is a great choice if you want to pass out homemade goodies this Halloween.
Candy corn may look difficult to recreate at home, but the recipe is actually quite simple. It does require some time, however, as each candy piece must be individually shaped. This a great project to include the kids in, as they will enjoy making their own candy and will probably be eager to help you out with the "labor" of forming the candy corn bits.
Homemade Halloween Candy
This video demonstrates how to make some festive and unique treats for Halloween. Ideas range from the gruesome (witch's fingers) to the cute (a boo-faced fondant for a cake), but all embody the Halloween spirit.
Step 1: What You Need to Make Candy Corn
You will need:
- 4 cups of small marshmallows (mini-sized)
- 16 ounces confectioner's sugar
- Orange and yellow food coloring
- A rolling pin
- A large, microwaveable bowl
- A flexible rubber spatula
Step 2: Making the Candy Corn
- Place the marshmallows into your bowl
- Microwave for about a minute
- Stir with spatula until you have a gooey consistency, with no chunks
- Stir in confectioner's sugar until thickened
- Turn out onto a flat surface that has been sprinkled with confectioner's sugar
- Coat hands with a sprinkling of confectioner's sugar
- Knead your "dough" as though it were bread, until smooth and no longer sticky, adding more sugar if needed
- Divide dough evenly into three balls
- Work orange food coloring into one ball, and yellow food coloring into another (the last one will remain white)
Step 3: Shaping the Candy Corn
Once you have 3 differently colored balls, it is time to start shaping. Roll each ball between your hands to form a long, thin "snake" shape. Then set each roll side by side, with the yellow in the middle. Press them together. They should stick--if not, brush with water. You may use a rolling pin to further press and flatten, if desired.
- Now, use a knife to cut the strip into small triangles. Each triangle is a piece of candy corn! Store at room temperature, and keep free of moisture. Enjoy! http://candy.about.com/od/halloweencandyrecipes/ss/candy_corn_sbs_10.htm
