How to Make Camping Food

If you're headed out to the great outdoors, you will want to know how to make Camping Food. Unless you're traveling in an RV with all the comforts of home, you'll need to make some adjustments in food preparation and cooking techniques while you're camping.   • Camping supply stores sell dehydrated and freeze dried meals that are lightweight and easy to carry. While these may be necessary if you're taking a backpacking trip where weight is an issues, they can get boring after a while. If you have a home base to store some basic supplies, you can make delicious meals while camping.

Step 1: Supplies Needed for Camping Food

  • Regardless of whether you're cooking over a wood fire or a portable propane camp stove, there are some common supplies that will be useful as you cook at your camp site. If you're back packing, you'll want cookware that's light weight; if you're car camping, you may prefer cast iron as it retains heat and is easy to clean. Also think about what you can use in more then one way.

  3. Water jug
  4. Pots
  5. Skillets
  6. Spatula (regular & long)
  7. Mixing spoon & bowl
  8. Roasting forks
  9. Grill rack
  10. Matches
  11. Animal and bear resistant containers

  13. Wood or charcoal for fire
  14. Plates, cups, eating utensils, napkins for serving

Step 2: Camping Food Tips

  1. Pack oatmeal premixed with sugar, salt, dried fruit, nuts, and dry milk for an easy breakfast.

  2. Chill foods well before leaving home so that they stay at a safe temperature of under 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

  3. Wash your hands thoroughly before and after handling foods.

  4. Pack your cooler carefully, so that you don't need to take everything out to get to what you need. The first foods that you' are planning on using should be the last foods packed.

Step 3: Camping Food Recipes

  1. Breakfast Ideas: Omelets - Break 2-3 eggs and a couple of teaspoons of milk, salt and pepper into a baggie along with any vegtables and cheese you would like. Mush bag until throughly mixed. Put into a pot of boiling water over the fire or campstove for 10-13 minutes. Breakfast Scramble: Use a skillet over a fire or camp stove. Cut up potatoes usually 1/2 to 1 per person and brown with a bit of oil in the skillet, cut up and add any vegtables you may like as the potatoes are cooking. Break and mix eggs (usually 1-2 per person), a couple of tablespoons of milk per person, salt and pepper and mix in a small bowl. When vegtables and potatoes are done, pour the egg mixture over top and cook mixing to get egg cooked. Sprinkle with cheese when egg is cooked and serve. KOA: Dough Boys
