How To Make Biscuits
This recipe demonstrates how to mix and bake homemade biscuits. In order to make biscuits, you need to combine the dry ingredients, cut in the shortening, add liquid, roll out the dough, and cut and bake the biscuits. While there are a few more steps than just popping open that blue tube, the results are well worth the added effort. -
To make 10 biscuits, you'll need:
Biscuits Ingredients
- 2 cups flour, plus extra for countertop and hands
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 5 1/3 tablespoons unsalted butter, diced and chilled
- 2 cups cold milk
Biscuits Equipment
- Mixing bowl
- Whisk
- Large spoon
- Rolling pin
- Biscuit cutter or glass that is 2-2 1/2 inches in diameter
- Cookie sheet, lightly greased
Step 2: How to Make Biscuits
- Preheat oven to 450F.
- Whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt in a mixing bowl until combined.
- Cut in the butter to the flour mixture with a pastry blender until the mixture has the texture of coarse crumbs. If you don't have a pastry blender, you can use two knives.
- Make a well in the center of the mixture and pour in the milk all at once.
- Stir quickly until combined into a moist dough.
- Spread some flour on your work surface, making sure your hands are coated.
- Turn the buttermilk biscuit dough onto the surface, and knead it until smooth. Don't overwork the dough, you just want to make sure everything is well mixed.
- Flatten dough into an oval with hands.
- Roll dough out to 1/2 inch thickness with a rolling pin.
- Flour a 2-2 1/2 inch biscuit cutter. If you don't have a biscuit cutter, you can use a glass turned upside down or a round cookie cutter.
- Stamp out biscuits.
- Place biscuits on the cookie sheet.
- Bake biscuits for 10 minutes until golden brown.
