Introduction
- German food will be familiar to Americans, as many German dishes have become integral parts of American cuisine. Hamburgers, hot dogs, sauerkraut, meatloaf, and pot roast all got their start in German kitchens.
Step 1: Authentic German Ingredients
- Most of the foods you need to stock a German kitchen, are readily available in American markets. The selection of German sausages may be limited, however, as only a very small number of the over 1500 varieties of German sausages are available outside of Germany. Commonly used foods in authentic German cuisine include:
- Meats such as pork, beef, and poultry
- Carrots, turnips, spinach, peas, beans, broccoli, cabbage, onions and white asparagus
- Potatoes, noodles, and dumplings
- Mustard
- Parsley, thyme, laurel, chives, black pepper, juniper berries and caraway
- Horseradish
Step 2: Authentic German Cooking Techniques
- There is no special equipment needed to prepare German food, as most dishes use conventional cooking techniques.
- Meat is usually pot-roasted or braised, either on the stove top or in the oven.
- Sausage is usually purchased, rather than being made at home.
Step 3: Authentic German Menu Planning
- A typical German meal begins with an appetizer, which is followed by a soup course. The main dish is usually accompanied by two side dishes, and followed by a sweet treat. German meals are usually accompanied by beer or wine.
