The old fashioned cocktail originated back in the early 1800's. A drink made from sugar, water, orange zest, and bourbon, the old fashioned is a refreshing change from the thick, fruity drinks usually served at parties and other events. The simple ingredients and ease of preparation make this a favorite with bartenders wanting to add something more to the drink menu than wine and frozen concoctions. Read on to learn how to make an old fashioned cocktail.
Tips
A spoon can be used in place of a muddler if you do not have one.
Large ice cubes keep the old fashioned cocktail from becoming watered down.
Demonstration of How to Make an Old Fashioned
Jeffery Morgenthaler, bartender at Clyde Common in Portland, Oregon, offers an informative and instructional video on how to make the classic Old Fashioned Cocktail. Morgenthaler's technique shows how easy it is to create this forgotten favorite.
Introduction
Gather the ingredients before starting to make the old fashioned because this is a drink made and served in the same glass and you do not want the ice to water down the flavors before serving.
You will need:
- 1/4 ounce simple syrup (a 2 to 1 ratio of sugar and water)
- 2 dashes of bitters
- 2 ounce of Bourbon
- 1 slice orange zest
- Ice to fill the glass
Step 1: Start with the Simple Syrup and Bitters
Add the simple syrup to the old fashioned glass and shake in the bitters. If you prefer to make the syrup in the glass, add one sugar cube and a splash of water and muddle the two until no sugar crystals remain. After the syrup is formed, continue making the old fashioned as directed.
Step 2: Add the Orange Zest
Place the orange zest in the glass and gently press to release the oils, allowing the orange flavor to mix with the syrup. You do not need to mash the zest, simply press it out.
Step 3: Add Bourbon and Ice
Pour the bourbon into the glass and stir to combine the flavors. Add ice to fill the glass and stir to chill the drink. You can garnish the old fashioned cocktail with a slice of orange and a cherry placed on a swizzle stick.
That is all it takes to make an old fashioned cocktail. Enjoy and please drink responsibly.
