Step 1: What You Need to Make Apple Pie
Apple Pie Ingredients
- Pie crust, rolled out to fit a 9 inch pie plate
- 10-14 large apples, peeled, cored, and sliced thickly (about 12 cups)
- 1 1/2 tablespoons flour
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons butter, chopped
- 2 tablespoons milk or cream
- 1 tablespoon sugar, mixed with 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon
Apple Pie Equipment
- 9 inch pie plate
- Mixing spoons
- Mixing bowl
- Pastry brush
Step 2: How to Make Apple Pie
- Preheat oven to 425 F.
- Place the bottom crust in the pie plate.
- Mix the flour, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in a bowl.
- Toss the apples in the sugar mixture.
- Place the apples in the bottom crust, mounding the apples in the center.
- Scatter the butter on top of the apples.
- Place the top crust on the pie, and crimp the edges.
- Brush the top with of the pie with milk or cream, and sprinkle with the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
- Make several slits in the top of the pie for steam to escape.
- Place the pie in the oven, and bake for 10 minutes.
- Reduce heat to 350 F and continue to bake an additional 50- 60 minutes, until crust is browned and filling is bubbling. Insert a knife through one of the slits to make sure the apples are tender.
Step 3: Apple Pie Variations
- Substitute 1 cup fresh cranberries and 1/2 cup dried cranberries for 2 of the apples, increasing the sugar to 1 cup, for Apple cranberry pie.
- Add 1/2 cup raisins to the basic recipe, if desired.
- Make a deep dish apple pie by placing the filling in a greased1 1/2- 2 quart baking dish, and topping with a single crust. You'll need most of the recipe for a two crust pie crust to top the baking dish. Bake extra crust covered in cinnamon sugar for pie crust cookies.
