How To Make A Stuffed Burger

A stuffed hamburger is similar to a traditional beef burger except that ingredients are inserted into the center of the burger to add flavor and pizazz to this summer classic.

Introduction

A stuffed hamburger is an exciting and easy twist on a summer favorite. This How-To guide will show you how to create a Mushroom, Onion and Blue Cheese Stuffed Gourmet Hamburger. Other recipe options are available on this page under "Stuffed Hamburger Recipes". The process of creating stuffed hamburgers is consistent no matter what you choose to stuff your hamburgers with.

The ingredients that you will need include:

  1. 2 - 3 lbs of medium ground beef
  2. 1 sweet Vadalia onion, diced
  3. 1/4 lb of mixed variety mushrooms (button, portobello, chanterelle, etc), diced
  4. 1 large egg
  5. 1 leaf of fresh basil, diced
  6. 5 leaves of fresh thyme, diced
  7. 1 clove of garlic, diced
  8. 100 grams of blue cheese

Step 1: Choose Your Ingredients

  1. The best hamburgers are made from the best beef. If possible, use a meat grinder to prepare locally raised flank cuts into ground beef. If shopping at a grocery store, purchase medium ground beef.
  2. Ensure that your beef stays as cold as possible throughout the grinding or unpacking processes.
  3. In a large chilled bowl, gently pull the ground beef apart so that it is not compacted in the bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and store in fridge.
  4. Collect your stuffing ingredients so that they are within easy reach. You need to work quickly to keep the beef cold and moist.

Step 2: Mix the Ingredients

  1. Dice all of the ingredients listed.
  2. In a skillet, cook onions until they sweat. Add mushrooms and cook on medium heat until golden brown.
  3. Remove onions and mushrooms from skillet, place in fridge and allow them to completely cool.
  4. Quickly remove ground beef from fridge, combine 1 large egg, 1 diced leaf of fresh basil, 5 diced leaves of fresh thyme, 1 clove of diced fresh garlic.
  5. Using your hands, gently combine the beef with the other ingredients. Don't overmix, once you see that the ingredients are spread throughout the beef, stop.
  6. Return beef to fridge for at least 30 minutes. Allow to cool.

Step 3: Assemble the Hamburgers

  1. Cut 4 square sections of plastic wrap.
  2. Remove both the chilled mixtures of onions / mushrooms and the beef from the refrigerator
  3. Form 8 thin patties from the ground beef. Be careful not to over handle the beef
  4. Place a spoon full of the onion, mushroom mixture in the middle of 4 patties
  5. Add a small portion of blue cheese on top of the mixture
  6. Place a meat patty on top to form a closed hamburger
  7. Wrap in plastic wrap and press down gently to seal the hamburger
  8. Return finished hamburgers to the fridge as they are assembled

Step 4: Cook and Serve

  1. Preheat BBQ to 500 degrees
  2. Remove the plastic wrap from each hamburger
  3. Brush with Extra Virgin Olive Oil
