How to Make a Spider Web

A trademark Halloween decoration are the spiderwebs that people create in the corners of their porches, across doorways or in windows. If you, too, want to decorate your home in spiderwebs, you can always buy them at the store. A more fun (and economical) alternative is to make your own. This guide will walk you through how to make a spider web step-by-step.

Introduction

Making spider webs is a fun and easy Halloween project. All you need to do is find a few supplies and invest a little time.

Step 1: Supplies Needed to Make A Spider Web

Making a spider web requires only a few essential supplies:

  1. Cotton batting
  2. Thin-gauge wire
  3. Plastic spiders — you can buy these at any store that sells Halloween decor, or you can make your own.

Step 2: Create Your Spider Web

After you have your necessary supplies, you can start building your spider web.

  1. Begin by cutting 10-12 inch long pieces of wire
  2. Twist pieces together to form shapes.
    1. To make the traditional spider web shape, create a few off-kilter circles in decreasing sizes then connect them together with straight pieces of wire.
    2. To make more ragged webs, twist the wires into any shape you choose.
    3. It is a good idea to leave a little wire hanging off the edge so that your batting will have something to hook onto.
  3. Once you have your frames looking the way you want them, you can start stretching the batting over them.
    1. Cut your batting into sections that are approximately 12 inches long and 12 inches wide.
    2. Stretch the batting over the frame, securing it with the ends you previously left loose. Tug the batting in various directions to give it a more natural look.
    3. If there are thin places, pull a second piece of batting over the first, stretching it in the opposite direction for texture.

Step 3: Decorate Your Spider Web

Once you have your webs, your spider web needs its last necessary element: spiders. Place the plastic spiders into your web (or webs), driving the legs into the batting to hold the spiders in place. To add an extra element, you can also add in plastic flies or other bugs. Once your web is done, hang it in the desired location and prepare to scare!
