How to Make a Sausage Grilled Cheese Sandwich

What You'll Need

Ingredients

  • Small loaf focaccia bread, sliced
  • 1 cooked Italian sausage, sliced
  • 3 slices asiago cheese
  • 3-4 tbsp butter
  • 2 tsp whole-grain mustard
Equipment
  • Butter knife
  • Cast-iron frying pan or griddle
  • Spatula
  • Plate

Step 1: Prep the Bread

Heat your frying pan over medium heat and add the butter to the pan so that it melts. Spread the mustard on the bread and add it to the sizzling butter with the mustard side up.

Step 2: Fry the Sandwich

Allow the bread to start browning then layer the cheese onto both pieces of bread. Cook for a few minutes then place the fried sausage on one of the piece of bread.

Step 3: Cook and Flip

Use the spatula to flip the piece of bread without the sausage on top of the one with sausage. Cook and flip if needed until both sides are golden brown. Cook longer if you prefer a crispier sandwich.

Step 4: Cut and Serve

Remove the sandwich from the pan with your spatula, set it on your cutting board or plate and slice in half. Plate and serve.

Tips and Suggestions

Different types of sausages have separate things to offer to a sandwich. Review a few suggestions below and see which sausage best suits you from the following:
  • Polish is a fresh pork and beef sausage fused with garlic and pepper. Goes great with onions and sauerkraut. This option yields the sandwich an abundance of flavor.
  • Kielbasa is fresh smoked sausage that is great with a little garlic and mustard. This is a great option if you like your sandwiches to be extra salty.
  • Spicy Italian is a hotter sausage, which is usually prepared with onions and spicy peppers. This type of sausage would make for a spicy sandwich with extra zest.
  • Vegetarian sausage is a healthier take on sausage, focusing on herbs and spices. The veggie route would bring a lighter, fresher taste to the sandwich with emphasis on flavor.
