Introduction
Wearing decorative bonnets at Easter is tied into the tradition of wearing new clothes during the spring holiday to celebrate the renewal of the year. Although you can purchase a rabbit Easter bonnet at a shop, you can also create your own using a paper plate, cardboard, ribbon and other decorations as you desire. Not only will this result in a truly individual and unique Easter bonnet, but it will also offer your family the opportunity to spend some time crafting together. -

Step 1: Make the Bonnet

- Fold the paper plate over the wearer's head. Depending on the head size of the person who will be wearing the bonnet, you may have to trim the paper plate so it is the right size
- Cut two lengths of yarn or ribbon eight to twelve inches long—they should be long enough to tie under the wearer's chin to secure the bonnet
- Cut two small slits or holes on opposite sides of the paper plate. Thread a length of ribbon or yarn through each hole. If necessary, tie a knot or tape the ribbon or yarn on the inside of the paper plate so that it doesn't slip back through the hole
-
Step 2: Make and Attach the Ears
- Trace (if necessary) and then cut two rabbit ears out of the cardboard. Leave a tab of cardboard about one inch square at the bottom of each ear
- Cut two slits the same size as the cardboard tabs (about one inch across) in the top of the paper plate bonnet where you would like the ears to be
- Slide the tabs on the bottom of the ears through the slits in the top of the paper plate. Secure the tabs to the inside of the paper plate with tape or glue
- Flip the paper plate over and fold the ears back so that they stand up. If they are too floppy, attach a piece of cardboard, a Popsicle stick or some other stiff material to the back of the ears to make them stand up

Step 3: Decorate
Using crayons, paint or markers, color, draw designs, shapes or otherwise decorate the bonnet and ears as desired. Attach sparkles, ribbon, flowers, cutout shapes or any other decorations you are using to the bonnet with glue. Once the glue is dry, place the bonnet on your head, secure it under your chin with the ties and you're ready to go! -
