Do you want to set up a manger scene this Christmas? This page will show you the proper way to arrange and display a replica of Jesus Christ's nativity in your home, church, office, or any other location. Just read the steps below to learn how to make a nativity scene of your own.
A nativity scene is also known as a creche, and depicts the tale of the birth of baby Jesus as told in the New Testament bible gospels of Matthew and Luke. The story goes that the Virgin Mary and Joseph were looking for a place to sleep for the night in Bethlehem, but could not find shelter as the inns were all full. They sought refuge in a stable, which is where Jesus is said to have been born. http://www.nativitysets.com/the-hativity-story/
Step 1: What You Need to Make a Nativity Scene
Here is what you will need. Keep in mind that the men typically wear long robes, while Mary is generally dressed in long, flowing light blue or light brown:
- A stable or manger setting
- Hay
- Farm animals, including sheep, donkeys and camels
- An angel
- The Virgin Mary
- Joseph
- Three kings/wise men
- Shepherds
- Baby Jesus
The Nativity Story
This video will give you a background of the nativity scene, as told in the bible. You will also see ideas for setting up your own manger scene. Keep in mind that there is not necessarily a "right" or "wrong" way to set up your scene, as long as the basic elements are there.
Step 2: How to Set Up the Nativity Scene
- Find an area large enough for your display
- Set up your stable
- Lay down hay
- Place baby Jesus in the center
- Place Mary on one side of Jesus, and Joseph on the other
- Arrange animals and shepherds around the trio
- Set up the kings/wise men at a distance
- Set up the angel at the top, watching from above http://www.doityourself.com/stry/creche
Step 3: Timing Your Nativity Scene
If you will be displaying your nativity scene for an extended period of time, you may wish to show the progression of the event by changing it every day. To do this, start with only a manger and stable animals. Next, Mary and Joseph gradually make their approach, followed by shepherds and sheep. Jesus may be added on Christmas day, and then the wise men arrive on Kings Day, which is January 6th. http://www.doityourself.com/stry/creche/ref?
