Introduction
- While there is a significant amount of debate as to the time and place of the origin of the Margarita, there is no debating the fact that it has become one of the most popular tequila-based cocktails in the world. Whether you're on the beach in Acapulco or sitting at the bar stool of your local watering hole, enjoying a stiff Margarita has become more than just a casual way to kick back and imbibe some alcohol. For some it has become the symbol of a laid-back, sun-soaked lifestyle, found on the postcards of Mexico and in tropical themed songs. If you are interested in wasting away in Margaritaville, follow the simple steps in this guide.

Making a Margarita
- Although there are many different ways to make a Margarita (flavored, blended, frozen, etc.), traditional Margaritas usually follow the same basic recipe. Regardless of whether you are making one Margarita for yourself or a pitcher of Margaritas for a party, follow the 3 - 2 - 1 proportion rule and you'll have perfect Margaritas every time. Here is how to make the two most common types of Margaritas:
-
Traditional
]- Take a lime wedge and wet the rim of your Margarita glass.
- Pour some salt on a plate and dip rim of your glass in it so that the salt sticks to the rim.
- Put the tequila, lime juice, triple sec and ice into your cocktail shaker.
- Shake aggressively until you start to see condensation on the outside of the shaker.
- Fill the Margarita glass with ice and pour the Margarita mixture into your glass.
- Garnish with a lime wedge and enjoy!
-
Blended
- Repeat steps 1 and 2 of the traditional Margarita recipe.
- Put the tequila, lime juice, triple sec and a large amount of ice into a blender.
- Blend thoroughly until the mixture is smooth and all of the ice cubes have been pulverized (usually about 20 - 30 seconds).
- Pour the frozen Margarita mix into your glass.
- Garnish with a lime wedge and enjoy!
- Watch out for brain freeze!

Margarita Tips & Tricks
- To make different flavored Margaritas, just substitute any type of flavored liqueur for the Triple Sec (which is naturally orange flavored).
- If you want to get adventurous, try adding real pieces of fruit to your cocktail (i.e. Put real strawberries in with some strawberry liqueur).
- If you don't like the bitter taste of the salt, you can always replace it with sugar.
- Margaritas are delicious and perfectly mask the harsh taste of tequila, which can lead to excess consumption. Be sure to always enjoy Margaritas in moderation.
- Use cheap ingredients and you lower the quality of your Margarita and increase your chances of a hangover.
