Introduction
- The Manhattan is believed to have originated in the 1870's in New York City at the Manhattan Club. Legend has it that socialite Jennie Jerome (Winston Churchill's mother) asked the bartender to make a special drink for newly elected Governor Samuel J. Tilden. The bartender proceeded to concoct the Manhattan. The original recipe calls for the ingredients to be stirred even though some people prefer for it to be shaken. The Manhattan is not a martini—it's just served in a martini glass.

What You'll Need
- Manhattans were originally made with rye whiskey, however, most Manhattans today are made with bourbon or Canadian whiskey. Some recipes call for a lemon twist, but this one will focus on how the Manhattan was originally made and leave the lemon twisting up to you.
