How to Make a Han Solo Halloween Costume

Han Solo is the renegade of the Star Wars universe, featured in the first three Star Wars films (episodes 4-6) by George Lucas. Han Solo is a swashbuckler in space, laser-blaster in hand, ready to take on any fight against any enemy. The Han Solo Halloween costume is an excellent choice for those ready to take on the Empire and all those ghouls and goblins. Here, you'll learn how to make a Han Solo Halloween costume.

Tips

  1. Buy the clothing off-the-shelf, look for deals at second-hand stores and garage sales

  2. Find a laser blaster at a toy store

  3. Make sure to put a couple of scuff marks on your boots

  4. Have a rough and tough attitude

  5. Watch out for Jabba and Carbonite!

This video features Han Solo in his trademark garb in the 2004 rework of the original Star Wars movie. Note that the costume looks a bit dusty and worn, as if Han has just been in a laser blaster fight or two.

Introduction

The Han Solo Halloween costume can be made with off-the shelf items, fairly quickly and easily. It's much cheaper to get some of these items second hand, at a thrift store, garage sale, or flea market. You'll need to be able to use a hot glue gun.

What You'll Need

  1. Dark Pants – Either black or dark brown, tough material like denim or corduroy
  2. White Shirt – Long sleeved with a V neck, and a collar if possible.
  3. Dark Vest – Should match the color of the pants
  4. Leather Belt – Brown, 2 inches wide, should be a couple sizes too big for your waist
  5. Scrap Piece of Brown Leather – about 24” long, 2-3 inches wide (this can be from an old belt)
  6. Dark Boots – Black or dark brown boots
  7. Cardboard
  8. Metallic Silver Spray Paint
  9. Hot Glue Gun
  10. Big Scissors – You'll need to cut leather
  11. Laser Blaster – You can find something similar to Han Solo's at a toy store
  12. Two small nuts and 1/2” long bolts
  13. Drill with a drill bit about the same size diameter as the bolt

Step 1: Belt and Holster

The most difficult part of the Han Solo Halloween costume is the belt and laser blaster holster. The belt hangs around Han's waist, and is a bit too large to fit well. It needs to droop down and inch or two from fitting correctly. The laser blaster is on the right side of his leg, although if you're left handed, you should probably do it on the left side.

To create a Han Solo belt, you'll need your larger-than-need-be leather belt, a piece of cardboard, and metallic spray paint. Cut the cardboard into a hexagon (six-sides), sort of like a stop sign, but make it a bit squished, rather than equal on all sides. It should be about 3 inches across. You can optionally use aluminum (from a sheet or recycle from cans). Take the cardboard and spray it with metallic paint. Once the paint has dried, glue the cardboard to the existing buckle of the belt. Make sure that you can still secure the belt before committing to it being glued on.

Next, the laser blaster holster is on the side of the right leg. Take your scrap piece of leather and cut a piece long enough to wrap around the middle portion of your thigh. Take another, smaller length of piece and create a loop with it, the gun's barrel should fit into it. Place the loop piece on top of the longer piece of leather and drill two holes through each. You'll want to drill a hole on each side of the loop to maintain the loop. Once the holes are drilled, take your bolt, starting from the back of the larger piece of leather, and through the holes of the looped piece. The bolts should face outward of the holster, and not stick out to far.

Now, you will have a holster that can be glued around the middle of the thigh on the dark pants.

Step 2: The Clothing

You shouldn't have to do too much to modify the clothing for the costume. Han Solo was not flashy in dress, only in bravado and attitude. The dark boots should be shined, but then make sure to put a couple scuff marks on them. Pants should look worn, even have a bit of dust for that Tatooine desert effect. The shirt should be loose fitting, but only loose enough to be comfortable. The vest needs to match the look of the pants, so if you go with desert dust, do that to the vest too. You should not wear adornments like rings or necklaces, but if you're married, you may have a Darth Vader-like battle with your wife if you take off your wedding ring.

Step 3: Attitude

Pulling off the Han Solo Halloween costume is clothing, laser blaster, and probably most important, attitude. Han has a rough and tough mentality. He doesn't back down from a fight, and isn't afraid to unleash his blaster on the occasional evil alien or stormtrooper.

Wear the attitude like you wear the clothes, and soon Jabba the Hut will be after you!
