How to Make a Guitar

If you want a custom instrument at a low cost, why not learn how to make a guitar? You can design and build it to suit your own tastes and needs. Learn to do it yourself with this guide.

Guitar making is an excellent hobby for the musically inclined do-it-yourselfer. It takes some tools and precision, but a guitar can reasonably be made at home. This project is not recommended for the beginner, however, as there are sharp tools involved that are best handled by those with shop experience. If you are inexperienced but set on creating your own guitar, it is a good idea to take on some smaller projects before attempting to build your first instrument. Here’s how to get started.

Step 1: Buy the Parts

First, you will need to purchase the various parts necessary to begin making your guitar. Check the yellow pages or Internet to see if there is a store near you that sells guitar parts. By going to a physical store, you will be able to ask questions and get help in finding the right parts.

  • If there is no store near you, parts can be purchased online at a store like www.guitarpartsdepot.com.
  • To find out more about which guitar parts you will need, this site is a good resource.

Step 2: Follow a Guide

Guitar building is a lengthy, complex process. Therefore, you will need a good book or guide to show you the process step-by-step. You can go to your local library to find books for free. You can also go online to this instructional site for electric guitar or this one for acoustic. It is a good idea to skim through the entire guide before getting started, so that you can learn if you are capable of performing all of the required steps in the space that you will have available to you.

Step 3: Assemble Tools

You will need some basic tools to get started. These will include saws, a drill, a chisel, a rasp, a file, a jointer, and more. Refer to the specific guide you are using for a complete list of tools. Unless you have a fully-stocked wood shop in your garage, you will most likely need to visit a hardware store to get all of the right equipment.

Step 4: Create a Workspace

You will need a safe, spacious work area to build your guitar in. A garage or den is ideal, but a living room will do as long as it s not a high-traffic area. Be sure to lay down a sheet or newspaper so that you don’t destroy any of the floor. Always keep children away from sharp tools.
