How to Make a Gimlet

Gimlets are truly classic cocktails. They are incredibly simple, but have stood the test of time for over a hundred years. They may be mixed with gin if you like to stick to tradition, or with vodka if that is your preference. Read on to learn how to make a gimlet cocktail.

The gimlet was introduced in the late 19th century by Sir Thomas D Gimlette, a naval surgeon. He encouraged his messmates to drink lime juice with their liquor to promote good health, and thus the gimlet was born. http://cocktailmusings.blogspot.com/2010/06/suze-gimlet.html Several variations have been introduced since the drink's original conception, but lime is always a central ingredient. This page will show you how to make the most classic version of the gimlet, as well as other similar options.

Step 1: What You Need

There aren't any fancy ingredients in the gimlet. All you need is gin or vodka, and lime juice. Most bartenders prefer to use Rose's lime juice, which is a sweetened lime syrup, rather than (or in addition to) freshly squeezed lime. Sweetened lime makes the drink more palatable, and is part of the gimlet recipe in many official bar books.

  • You will also need ice and a cocktail shaker for optimal taste (although stirring is also acceptable). Lime is the traditional garnish for a gimlet.

Step 2: How to Make the Gimlet

To make a stirred gimlet, fill a glass with ice. Pour in equal parts gin (or vodka if preferred) and sweetened lime juice (or 2 parts liquor to one part fresh lime juice). Stir, garnish with lime, and serve.

For a shaken gimlet, fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add your ingredients (in the same proportions as above). Shake thoroughly, and pour into a glass. Garnish with a wheel or wedge, and serve.

Step 3: Gimlet Variations

  1. Some classic gimlet versions include soda. If you like your drinks fizzy, fill your glass halfway with equal parts gin (or vodka) and lime juice, and then top off with soda water.
  2. If you want some of the sweetness of Rose's lime juice, but also enjoy the tartness of fresh lime, try using half of each.
  3. If you find the lime juice to be overwhelming, simply change the proportions. Some recipes call for four ounces of liquor to just one ounce of lime (just be sure not to drive for a while after that one).
