Introduction
This is an easy and inexpensive craft that can go a long way towards adding warmth and color to your home. Leaf garlands are incredibly simple to make, and this is a great project for kids. Just make sure that young ones are careful with the needle, so that they don't cut themselves on the sharp point. -
Step 1: Go Leaf Hunting
Finding great leaves just may be the most fun part of this project! Look for colorful, inviting specimens on walks, or around your front porch. If you know of a park or other outdoor area that has trees with particularly colorful foliage, here's your excuse to head down there! Bring the whole family and some grocery bags, and you can make a full day out of leaf-hunting. -
Step 2: Gather Materials
Besides leaves, you will also need:- A sewing needle
- A thimble
- Spool(s) of thread, in desired color(s)
- Small nails (for hanging)
- A hammer
Step 3: Make the Garland
Once you have your leaves and materials on hand, you are ready to begin making your garland. Here's how:- Arrange your leaves in the order that you would like to see on your garland; you may do this randomly, or create patterns with various colors
- Run your thread through the eye of the sewing needle and secure into place
- Poke your needle through the thick middle vein of the leaf, and then out the other end (not actually puncturing the "skin" of the leaf)
- Continue until you are satisfied with the length of your garland
- Once finished, hang where desired
