With the massive popularity of the Dora the Explorer Nickelodeon television show, and the new Dora Links doll and games out this year, Dora costumes are sure to be hot, hot, hot this Halloween. If you want to put together an inexpensive homemade costume that your child will love, check out this guide on how to make a Dora the Explorer costume.
Dora costumes are cheap and simple to make, and this can be a fun project to complete with your child. All of the necessary items can be found at your local superstore (such as Target or Walmart), and the whole costume can be finished in an hour or two.
- Keep in mind that this Dora costume is not limited to kids. Adult fans can have some fun by dressing up, as well, and the same directions work for both children and grown-ups!
Dora the Explorer's Super Silly Costume Maker
Sometimes Dora the Explorer makes her own costumes. However, she has some help from her Super Silly Costume Maker! Watch here to see Dora and her friend Diego design an outfit to wear to the Super Silly Fiesta. Making your own Dora the Explorer costume takes a bit more work than what you see here, but it can also be much more fun!
Step 1: What You Need for the Dora Costume
- A pink t-shirt
- Iron-on Dora decals (optional)
- Orange sweatpants
- White tennis shoes
- Yellow socks
- A clean string mop head
- A beaded bracelet
- A purple backpack
- A stuffed monkey for Boots (optional)
- Brown fabric dye
- Scissors
- Hair clips or pins http://www.ehow.com/how_2181944_dora-explorer-costume.html
Step 2: Make the Hair
Dora has very big brunette hair, which is why a mop head works perfectly!
- Dye the mop head dark brown
- Let dry completely
- Secure the mop to the head of whomever will be wearing the costume
- Trim bangs in the front
- Trim around the ends to form a bob, if necessary
Step 3: Make the Rest of the Costume
- Trim the sweatpants to form shorts
- Iron any desired decals onto the t-shirt
- Add designs to the backpack, if desired
- Put on the entire ensemble
- Fix the hair last, so that it does not get messed up while pulling on the t-shirt
- Carry around the stuffed monkey to complete the look (note that if the hands will be used a lot, it may be a good idea to skip the monkey, unless you wish to attach it to the backpack or another part of the costume)
