Introduction

  • Collages can express our emotions, beliefs, interests and ideas in the most creative ways. A collage can be made using magazine photos, greeting cards, digital photos—virtually anything!

Step 1: Choose a Design

  • Are you hoping to display a collection of vintage greeting cards? Would you like to put together a collage of your favorite photographs of friends and family? The first step you must undertake before you make your collage is deciding what kind of design you wish to create. Collages can be made using:
  1. Magazine clippings
  2. Newspaper clippings
  3. Vintage photographs
  4. Old greeting cards or postcards
  5. Scraps of material, including:
    1. Ribbons
    2. Lace
    3. Fabrics
    4. String
  6. Wallpaper
  • Depending on what you want your collage to look like, you may want to arrange the pieces ahead of time. Some prefer to just let creativity take over as they add items to their collages. There is no wrong way to do it—just have fun!

Step 2: What You'll Need

  • Once you have decided what kind of collage you want to make, you'll need to gather all the materials you will need to put it together. This may include:
  1. Items you want to add to your collage
  2. Scissors
  3. Glue
  4. Flat, heavy paper or poster board
  5. An X-acto knife
  6. Yarn
  7. Paint
  8. Paint brushes

Step 3: Make Your Collage

  • Once you have chosen a design for your collage and assembled all the necessary items you'll need, it is time to put it together.
  1. Cut out or trim the items you will be using in the collage
  2. Prepare the background of your collage
    1. Cut the paper or poster board to the desired size
    2. Paint or decorate the paper
  3. Spread a thin layer of glue in the area of the paper where you wish to place your first collage item
  4. Place the item on the paper, gently pressing down to secure it
    1. Be careful not to use too much glue; the edges of your collage items could curl
  5. Add items one by one, using glue and gentle pressing
  6. Smooth the items down as you go to avoid any lumps
  7. Allow the collage to dry for several hours
  • If items are still loose after ample drying time, you can seal the collage using a mixture of three parts water to one part of glue. Carefully brush the mixture over the top of your collage.
