Step 1: Things You'll Need
- Scissors
- Sewing Machine (optional)
- Pins
- An iron
- Measuring tape
- 1 and 1/2 yard of lining
- 1 and 1/2 yard of fabric
- Decorative trim
Step 2: Make Your Pattern
- Start by folding the lining fabric in half to form a long rectangle, smoothing out any wrinkles. Next, fold it again to create a square making sure that the edges line up. You should have two folded sides and two sides of the square will be free so you can lift the layers individually from one corner.
- Pin your measuring tape to the corner opposite of where your square opens (opposite from where you would be able to separate the four layers of fabric.) By pinning the measuring tape in place at the corner, you create a 'compass.' Stretch the measuring tape out and make a mark along the lining fabric's outer edge at about 26". Then, move the measuring tape in towards the middle of the fabric about an inch at a time, marking the 26" mark until you reach the opposite edge from where you began. By making these marks, you create arch.
- Using your scissors, cut from your first marking across the arch you made until you reach the opposite end. When you open the fabric you will have a large complete circle.
Step 3: Attach Your Decorators Fabric to the Lining
- Place the outer fabric with the pattern, face side up
- Next, lay the pattern-lining down over it and pin the two fabrics together
- Once both pieces are pinned in together, cut along the edge of the fabric lining
- Take the pinned fabric to the sewing machine and make a straight stitch all the way around the edge of the Christmas tree skirt
- When the two pieces are folded together, fold it in half twice. At the center corner, pin your tape measurer in place and mark out a 2 to 3 1/2 inch arch to make the center hole for the tree.
- Cut a straight line from the outer edge towards the center circle.
- Pin along the cut edges and around the circle, leaving a few inches of fabric unpinned
- Sew up one side, around the circle and down the other side with the exception of a few inches (leave this fabric un-sewed for when you turn it inside out)
- Put your hand through the part of the fabric that you left un-sewed. Pull the fabric inside out so that the patterned fabric is now on the outside

Step 4: Sew Your Christmas Tree Skirt and Decorate
Once your fabric is turned rightside out, you can finish up by sewing the remaining opening together (just leave the inner circle and the split so that you can wrap the skirt around the tree.) After you have the base of your custom Christmas tree skirt created, you can embellish it as you like. Peruse through pictures of Christmas tree skirts online for a few ideas. If you want a traditional look, use tassels. If you prefer a Victorian look, try decorating with ribbons or lace. If you want a country feel, consider adding cute appliques to the fabric.
