The Cafe Disaronno cocktail is a refreshing easy drink to make that is embedded with an interesting history due to the Disaronno family, who created the amaretto liqeuer. The Disaronno brand is imbued with legend. Supposedly, a widowed woman posed as an art model for the Madonna of a church in Saronno for the artist Barnardino Luini. As a show of thanks, she made him the first batch of amaretto liqeuer made with apricot kernels steeped in brandy. The sculptor loved the woman and the liqueur and they fell in love. Today the brand builds on the legend of this "secret recipe", unchanged since 1525. The product is still made in Saronno and is sold across the world. The almond liqeuer has a slight bitter flavor with an infusion of fruits and herbs, the recipe of course is kept secret by the family. http://tripatlas.com/Amaretto#Disaronno%20Originale
These drinks are perfect to serve as an after dinner digestif , or perhaps on a cold winters day to warm up. The drink is not difficult to make, you will need amaretto liqeuer, coffee, whipped cream, sugar and coffee beans for decoration, if so desired. No special tools are needed and the task takes about 2 minutes to create.
Step 1: What You Need
DiSaronno's slogan is "pass the pleasure around." You can find DiSaronno liqeur at your local LCBO (in Ontario, Canada) or your local liquor store in the United States. To make the drink for one person you will need:
- 3/4 oz Amaretto Di Saronno® Liqueur
- 5 oz Hot Black Coffee
- 1 oz Whipped Cream
- 1 tsp Sugar
- 1 Irish Coffee Cup
These items are not crucial for making the drink, but can make the drinks easier to make and/or allow you more options:
- A bar spoon
- Cocktail napkins
- A jigger or small measuring cup
- Cinnamon
- Chocolate Sprinkles
- Coffee beans
Step 2: Mixing the Cafe Disaronno Cocktail
- Fill your coffee cup with hot coffee.
- Measure about an ounce of Amaretto liqueur, and pour it into the glass. You may also simply eyeball the correct amount if you do not have a jigger or if you do not want a measured shot.
- Stir in the sugar and sweeten to taste
- Using the spoon, place the whip cream on top.
- If so desired you can add cinnamon, chocolate sprinkles or coffee beans on top.
- Serve the hot drink with a napkin and enjoy!
Step 3: Variations
- DiSaronno Darkness - add 1/2 ounce of cognac to the coffee for an extra flavour
- Irish Coffee - instead of amaretto, add 1/2 ounce of Bailey's Irish Cream instead.
