Introduction
- Bug out bags are portable survival kits designed to help you survive for up to 72 hours following a disaster. With careful planning, you'll be able to put together a bug out bag that will contain all the things you'll need in the initial stages of a major crisis.
Step 1: Plan Ahead
- The key thing to remember about a bug out bag: it is designed to help you survive in the hours immediately following a major disaster. You will need to make your bag as portable as possible, so that you can easily grab it and take off quickly during an evacuation. Plan carefully to be sure your bug out bag is fully-stocked.
Step 2: Gather Supplies
- To make your bug out bag, you will first need to make a list of all the items you're likely to need. These may include:
- A disaster plan
- Have a prearranged meeting spot for everyone in your family to gather after a disaster
- Possible evacuation routes
- Maps
- A first aid kit
- Enough water and non-perishable food for up to 72 hours
- Medications
- Extra cash
- NOAA weather radio
- Important documents (in a waterproof bag)
- Flashlight with extra batteries
- Filter masks
- Duct tape
- Heavy garbage bags
- Whistle
- Waterproof matches
- A wrench or pliers
- You may also want to include sleeping bags and a tent, clothing, and chlorine bleach in your bug out bag.
Step 3: Putting The Bug Out Bag Together
- Once you have all your supplies on hand, you should pack your bug out bag. Depending on how many supplies you have, you can use a small duffel bag, a backpack or another small piece of luggage. Just be sure not to over-pack your bag; you will need to be able to take it with you everywhere.
