Layering hair can be intimidating if you haven't done it before. As with any task, it's best to start off with the right information as well as the right tools. To layer hair you will need sharp scissors, multiple hair clips, a towel, a comb and a mirror. If you're cutting your own hair you will need a second mirror to see the back of your hair. Read on to learn How to Layer Hair.

Tips
- For shorter layers, angle the scissors so that they make smaller than a forty-five degree angle between the scissors and the hair. For example, if you are cutting hair close to the nape of the neck and you wish to make shorter layers, the scissors should be pointing somewhat towards the head rather than parallel to it.
- To make a wispy frame around the face, hold the hair flat beside the face and slide the scissors down it, much as you would wrapping paper after the first cut.
- To avoid visible cut marks, continue to hold the hair after it is cut and take small snips out of the ends of the hair with the scissors aiming almost parallel to the hair.

Introduction
Layering hair is actually quite easy once you get past your own fears. There are just a few things you should keep in mind as you begin to layer you hair or anyone else's. Make sure the scissors are sharp and that the hair is wet and clean. Cutting hair while it is dry is a good way to cause split ends and uneven layers. -
Step 1: Pin
Once you have all the tools gathered, comb the hair out so that it is tangle free. As you are combing the hair, decide what length you want the hair and how short the layers will be. Once you have decided on the length of the hair and layers, you may begin pinning the hair up in hair clips. To pin the hair up in hair clips, you need to break the project into sections. You may want to divide hair as if it were divided like lines on a pumpkin or you may want to clip the top part of the hair separate from the bottom. The idea is to put the hair into manageable locks. -
Step 2: Comb
Comb the hair that is not in a hair clip. Start at the bottom and mark the desired length by holding the hair between your fingers at the place it will be cut. Pull the hair straight back from the head. For example, if the hair you are starting with is at the nape of the neck, when you are ready to cut it, it should be held perpendicular to the head and neck. -

Step 3: Cut
Cut the hair by making the cut perpendicular to the hair. Repeat this step by using the previous hair cut as a measuring guide. For instance, after the first cut, continue to hold a portion of that lock of hair in your hand. Then, hold it against the next portion of hair to be cut. Make the new cut using the hair from the first one as a guide. Repeat this process over and over, working your way to the top of the head, always using the last cut as a guide. Start with long layers and make them shorter as needed. -
