How to Knit Socks

Knitted socks can be made in a variety of yarn weights and styles to accommodate the latest fashion trends and weather changes. In today's craft retail stores such as Joann Fabrics, you can find yarn specifically designed for sock knitting. In this step by step tutorial, you find out how to knit socks that fit 8 1/2 to 10 1/2 shoe sizes.

This do it yourself project is suitable for knitters that are comfortable with the basic knit and purl stitches as well as working in the round with double pointed needles. You should also be familiar with how to increase and decrease stitches. The more advanced stitches needed for this project are described in Step 1 below. To start making this pattern, you need the following materials: a set of size 2 double pointed knitting needles, 5 ounces of sport weight yarn, yarn needle and stitch holders. It is also a good idea to use a stitch counter to keep up with rounds.

It should take anywhere from 24 to 32 hours to make a pair of socks with the lighter weight yarn in this article. Because it takes quite a long time to knit socks, it is recommended that you place your loops on stitch holders when taking a break from the project. This prevents the loops from becoming stretched out of shape.

The sock pattern below is adapted from a vintage, public domain design printed in Botany College Hand Knits, Volume II. http://freevintageknitting.com/print/422 It has been modified with a cable stitch pattern for added visual interest. If you need more assistance with cables, read the How to Knit a Cable Stitch article.

Using the inside loops of the heel selvage, pick up 14 loops. To do this, hold the needle with the heel stitches on it in your right hand. Then, hold the empty needle in your left hand and pick up an edge loop on the heel flap side. Knit this loop as normal. Continue across until 13 more stitches are picked up. You now have 30 stitches on the heel needle.

Knit across the first instep needle with an empty needle. Place the new empty needle aside for now. Using the new instep needle just worked, knit across the last instep needle. You should have 28 stitches on one instep needle at this point. Use an empty needle to pick up 14 of the edge loops on the free side of the heel. Slip them from front to back on the needle. Knit across these new loops with the last empty needle. There are 14 stitches on this third heel needle. Finally, knit across the first 8 stitches of the first heel needle. This marks the midpoint of the heel. You should have one needle with 28 instep stitches and two needles with 22 heel stitches each. This makes a total of 72 stitches.
