How to Knit Fingerless Gloves

Like the name implies, fingerless gloves have no finger sections. There are many varieties that have different lengths and styles. Some are simple tubes with partial thumb shaping while others have short fingers. This garment is popular among various groups of people. It suits the style needs of trendy teens while being functional during the winter for anyone that needs to work in detail with their hands. This article shows you how to knit fingerless gloves in two different styles.

As long as you understand the basic knit stitches, you should have no problem performing this tutorial. However, one of the patterns includes cables. If you want to review the process of making them, read the How to Knit a Cable Stitch article. You need the following supplies to complete this how to task: a set of size 2 double pointed needles, (1) 4 ounce skein of super fine/fingering weight yarn, cable needles and a yarn needle. You will need 2 skeins for the Andean design. It should take anywhere from 9 to 10 hours to finish a pattern.

This tutorial demonstrates how to make cable and Andean-inspired fingerless gloves. The glove with cables features the Aran naughts and crosses cable stitch. The Andean variety uses color changes and a simple motif to enhance the look. The shaping in these patterns is adapted from a 1933 vintage public domain pattern. http://www.knitting-and.com/knitting/patterns.htm

Step 1: Basic Elements

  • Slip Knot:
  1. Make a loop with your yarn. Hold the tail behind it.
  2. Insert the hook into the loop on the right side. Move it under the vertical bar created by the tail. Bring it through the loop on the left.
  3. Pull the tail tight to make a knot. Leave a 6 inch tail.
  • Knitted Cast On:
  1. Create a slip knot on your knitting needle. Now, hold the needle in your left hand.
  2. Insert the second needle through the loop. Then, form a knit stitch.
  3. At this point, take the loop that you made and slip it from the right needle to the left one. You can slip it with a twist or just move it straight. Be sure to use the same method every time.
  • Knit Stitch:
  1. With the yarn behind the knitting needles, place the right needle on the left side of the first loop.
  2. Take it down and behind through the loop on the left needle. The right needle is behind the left one.
  3. Yarn over the right needle and bring the needle up hooking a loop on the right needle.
  4. Drag the right needle to the right to remove the old loop from the left needle.
  • Purl Stitch:
  1. With the yarn in front of the needles, put the right needle on the right side of the first loop.
  2. Insert the right needle in the loop from right to left. The right needle is in front of the left one.
  3. Yarn over the right needle then push the needle down and behind hooking up a new loop on the right needle.
  4. Slide off the old loop from the left needle.
  • Make 1 Increase:
  1. Using the left needle, bring the tip beneath the top horizontal strand of yarn stretched between the stitches on the needles. Hook the strand from front to back.
  2. Knit in the back of the new loop. Push the old loop off the left needle.
  • Basic Cast Off:
  1. Create 2 knit stitches in the next 2 loops on the left needle.
  2. Push the left needle into the second loop on the right needle.
  3. Hook the second loop and pass it over the first loop. You have one loop left on the right knitting needle.
  4. Knit the next stitch.
  5. Repeat steps 2 through 6 until you reach the end of the row. Cut a 6 inch length of yarn and take it through the last loop. Weave in the ends.
  • Note: At the end of the glove pattern, you have a row of ribbing. So, cast off with knit stitches over the knit stitches and purl stitches over the purl ones. This is called casting off in pattern.
  • Weaving in Ends:

Thread the tail end in your yarn needle. Now, weave the yarn in and out of the purl bumps on the inside of the gloves.

Step 2: Cable Fingerless Gloves

  • Cable Terms
  • Cable 4 Front: Using the cable needle, slip the next two stitches onto it and hang in front. Knit the next two stitches on the left needle. Then, knit the stitches from the cable needle individually.
  • Cable 4 Back: Using the cable needle, slip the next two stitches onto it and hang in back. Knit the next two stitches on the left needle. Then, knit the stitches from the cable needle individually.
  • Gauge

The gauge dimensions are 2 inches wide by 2 inches tall. A size 2 needle and super fine yarn were used to create the gauge.

  • Make a chain with 16 loops.
  • Row 1: Knit 16.
  • Row 2: Purl 16.

Step 3: Andean-Inspired Fingerless Gloves

This pattern uses the Andean weaving color change technique. To swap colors, push your needle through the stitch. Now, twist the new color towards you trapping the old color against the fabric. Wrap your yarn over and make the knit stitch. When you go to make your next stitch, twist away from you to trap the unused color.
