Introduction
- Arguing a good point is a treasured pastime for many people. A debate is only as good as its participants are passionate and knowledgeable, but even the brightest and most enthusiastic debaters can use the structure of a debate team to their longterm advantage.
Step 1: Is There a Debate Team?
- The first step you'll want to take is to check with your school's administration to find out if there is a debate team on campus. If so, find out how you can join. Talk to the president of the club and gather details. Find out how to try out, or even if you need to try out.
Step 2: Trying Out for the Debate Team
- The debate team captain will usually want to see your debating skills, so you will more than likely be given a test debate subject to prepare for and debate in front of the team. In preparation for your tryout:
- Research your topic.
- Gather your facts.
- Learn both sides of the argument back to front.
- Practice debating with your friends and family.
- Dazzle the debate team with your skills!
Step 3: Starting a Debate Team
- If the school you attend does not have debate team, it is up to you to get one started. If you don't have prior debate team experience, do some research and talk to the administration to find out what is required to start a new club at your school. Be sure that members understand:
- The power of public speaking
- The nature of debate
- How to argue both sides of a topic
- Sportsmanship
Conclusion
- Being able to debate efficiently and effectively on a debate team is a great skill, and will look good on your college application. Debate teams often travel to other schools, just as sports teams do, to argue issues. They also participate in competitions.
- Check to see if your school has a debate team. If it does, find out how to join and whether you'll be asked to try out by presenting an argument on a specific topic. If there is no debate team immediately available to you, consider starting one yourself.
