Introduction
- Joining the band is a great way to hone your musical skills, make new friends, and help promote your school. Unless your particular institution has a beginners' band, however, you will need to do some work before you're ready to play with the group. If you have the drive and determination, it shouldn't be long before you're all set to crank out some tunes with your fellow classmates in the school band.

Step 1: Talk to the Band Director
- The requirements for every school's band are different, so it is important to find out exactly what you need to do. Set up a meeting with the band director, and tell him or her that you are thinking about joining. The director will tell you when you can join and what the process is. They may also be able to help you pick out the instrument that is right for you. Be sure to find out what they are currently looking for, because the band might not need a member who plays your first choice of instruments.
Step 2: Get an instrument
- You will need to get hold of an instrument of your own, so that you can take it home and practice. There are a few possible ways to do this:
- Ask your school's band instructor if there are any loaners available. They may have extras on hand just for students like you.
- Rent. This is a good choice if you are just feeling out an instrument, and do not want to make a long-term commitment.
- Buy. If you know what you want to play and feel like you are ready to dedicate yourself to your decision, it is best to buy an instrument to call your own.
- Be sure to check with your school for any possible student discounts at nearby music stores. You may be able to get a pretty good deal this way.
Step 3: Learn to Play
- Once you have your hands on an instrument, it's time to start playing! Your best bet is to take lessons, because you'll want to learn how to handle your instrument the correct way from the beginning. You may be able to teach yourself a lot with books, but an instructor will be able to step back and look at your technique with a trained eye (which you obviously can not do yourself), and help you become the best musician you can be.
Step 4: Audition
- To play for any school band, you will need to audition. This means you will play for the band director privately, and she/he will evaluate your skill level and determine whether or not you are ready to play with the band. If you pass the audition and are invited to join, you will be assigned a position based on your audition performance. Do not be discouraged if you are not accepted, or if you are given a low position. With practice, you can improve your skills and wow the director at the next audition!
Conclusion
- Playing with the school band can be fun and exciting. It is also a lot of work, so be prepared to spend a good amount of time practicing. If you love making music and have patience to learn, you will find that being in the band will bring you enjoyment and satisfaction -- and make all of that practice time worthwhile.
