How to Install and Format the SD Memory Card on a Canon 60D DSLR

Most modern cameras use a SD card for their memory. This card is a secure disk that is very durable. These cards can be submerged in water or even dropped, although this is not recommended and should not be tested. These cards come in a variety of different memory sizes but they all have the same physical size.

The Canon 60D DSLR uses a SD card to store pictures and videos. Formatting the SD memory card helps to ensure that the card does not have any pictures or video from previous use. This also helps to ensure that the card functions properly with the camera. Formatting a card will completely erase anything that was on the card though, so it is important to print or transfer all of the files from the card before formatting it.

Step 1:

Open up the memory card door on the right hand side of the camera. There will be a slot in the camera for the card to slide into. Insert the card with the label facing the view finder screen and press it in until it clicks. There will be a little bit of a bounce as the card locks into place. This is normal.

Step 2:

Turn on the camera. There will be a red flashing light. This is the card access lamp. Do not open the card door or remove the card as this can damage the card or the camera. Once the light is done blinking, it is time to format the card so that the card is empty and ready to use.

Step 3:

In order to format the SD Memory card, make sure the camera is turned on. Once the camera is on, hit the menu button. This will bring up a series of choices. Choose the first camera settings option which will be indicate by a wrench with 1 dot next to it.

Once you are on the first camera settings option, use the quick control dial to select the format option. Press the set button in the center of the quick control dial to select this option. This will bring up a warning screen indicating that all information on the SD memory card will be lost. It will ask if you would like to continue. Select "ok" by hitting the set button once you have made sure that the files have been transferred or backed up.

On this screen, you will also be able to see how much memory is on the card. Remember that just because a memory card claims to have a certain amount of space, there may be a slight difference between the available and the actual. Most SD cards have some preformatted programs on them that allow them to lock and function better. Formatting the card will not remove these programs or files.
