Introduction
- Air conditioners provide chilled air to one or several rooms in a building. This page will take you through the steps of installing a simple air conditioner which is placed in and cools down one room. For more information on installing a central air conditioning system, which is capable of cooling down several rooms, visit Mahalo's guide to How to Install Central Air Conditioning.
Step 1: Types of Air Conditioners
- There are several types of air conditioners, but the most common ones for home use are air conditioners that are placed in windows and air conditioners which are installed by making a hole in the wall.
- Window air conditioners are easy to install. They are usually placed on the sill located below a window. They are run by electricity and needs to be plugged into the wall. One unit cool down primarily one room, although cool air in one room can have a minor effect on nearby rooms as well.
- Wall air conditioners are similar in structure to window air conditioners, but more complex to install since it's necessary make a hole through the wall to install them.
- The capacity of an air conditioner is measured in British thermal units (Btus). Is it generally recommended that you buy an air conditioner with at least 12,000 Btus per 500 square feet.Realtor: [http://www.realtor.com/home-garden/do-it-yourself/heating-air-conditioning/installing-window-air-conditioner.aspx?source=web Installing a Window Air Conditioner>
Step 2: Window Air Conditioners
- Installing an air conditioner placed in a windows is relatively easy.
- Before purchasing one, make sure to measure the window opening and sill so you know which size you will need. Chose a window close to an electrical outlet that provides enough power for the unit.
- Install the mounting device for the air conditioner by following the instructions that came with it. Install the air conditioner unit as instructed. Install the extension that close up the space on the sides between the air conditioner and the window.
- Use a foam strip (which sometime come with the air conditioner) to close up the gap between the window sashes which occurred by opening the windows.
- Caulk the unit so it stays in place.
Step 3: Through a Hole in the Wall
- Installing an air conditioner that is placed in a hole in the wall is more complex, as you will have to make a hole through the outer wall of your home. This could be tricky if you don't have previous experience in similar tasks.
- Start by choosing a location for the air conditioner. Place it under a window, since this location of the wall will have less wires and pipes. Chose a location above the height of wall outlets.
- Open the interior wall first.
- Attach the frames to the unit to the wall.
- Provide marks on the outside wall to see where to open it. You can do this by drilling holes through the wall in each corner.
- Go to the outside part of the wall. Use a saw to cut to the wall and remove the outside part of it.
- Install the air conditioner according to its instructions.
- Seal the wall on the inside and caulk it on the outside.
