With a little time, a screwdriver and a new doorknob kit, you will be on your way to installing a new doorknob. Even if you don’t have handyman or handywoman genes, changing a doorknob is a simple process that almost anyone with a screwdriver can perform. While exact instructions may vary for more elaborate doorknobs, the following instructions will work for most standard, two-half doorknobs.

• Doorknob Kit

You can skip this step and go to step 2 if you are installing a doorknob on a new door.

1. Removed the screws on the strike plate
2. Take off the strike plate. You may have to wedge a flat edge screwdriver in to “pop” it out.
3. Unscrew the screws on the doorknob
4. Pull on each side of the doorknob at the same time and gently pull apart.
5. Pull out the lock mechanism

Remove any excess paint, dirt or grime from the area where your new doorknob will be placed. If you need to paint the door, do it before installing your doorknob and make sure the paint has dried completely before you start your installation process.

1. Install the lock mechanism. The rounded edge should face the door facing and the straight edge should face the back of your door.
2. Screw the lock mechanism in place
3. Slide the part of the doorknob with the long post through the lock mechanism from the backside of the door.
4. Attach the remaining doorknob onto the post of the first installed part of the doorknob.
5. Secure the doorknob with screws. It is usually easier to use your hand to get the screws started and then you can tighten with a manual or electric screwdriver.
6. Test your new doorknob to make sure you have every part in place and that it functions properly.
