Although not all people are blessed with good handwriting, there are still ways on how to improve penmanship. Through constant practice and effort, someone can improve the way he/she writes. Like every goal a person has, this also requires patience and a little hard work.
Penmanship is defined as someone’s style, technique, method or skill when it comes to writing by hand. Penmanship can also be called calligraphy. Each person in the world has diverse techniques when it comes to writing; that’s why the output varies.
Some people may acquire similar calligraphy but at some point on their output, some disparities can be observed. Maybe a person could write almost all the alphabet the same except for the letter ‘G’, or maybe a set of people can have similar looking handwriting but if you’ll examine their writing thoroughly, there will still be difference between them.
Have you ever noticed what your penmanship looks like? If it looks clean and readable, then that means you have a good technique on handling and moving the pen. Each of us has different ways on how we hold a pen. This can also attribute to our handwriting. But if your calligraphy looks as if a chicken wrote whatever is on the paper, then maybe there’s something wrong on your writing style.
As stated before, there are still ways to improve your penmanship. This guide will help you enhance your writing technique so you can have better penmanship. The results may not come right away though. You need to practice a lot to eventually achieve a better penmanship.
How to Improve Your Handwriting
Here’s a video to help you learn a few things on improving your penmanship. This video teaches you how to get a better penmanship by copying a particular font or calligraphy you want.
Although copying a particular writing style can be strenuous, you will be sure to get exceptional penmanship. There’s an easier way though and that is to improve whatever you have as of the moment. Read the simple guidelines on this page for you to find out how.
Step 1: Cursive or Not?
Prepare your materials such as a pen or a pencil; whichever you feel more comfortable, and a piece of paper (paper with lines are best for this practice). Write your whole name, both in cursive and in print form. Now, choose which one looks better; the cursive way or the print way? Once you’ve chosen which among the two looks better, we will start enhancing that way of writing.
Step 2: Improving the Technique you Know
Begin to write capital A – Z letters then their small cap versions. Also write the numbers 0 to 9. How do they look? Messy? Unreadable? Now try re-writing them again, but this time, write slowly and put effort on writing them. Writing slowly enables you to control the pen and your hand movements as well.
Step 3: Improving the Bad Parts
After writing the alphabets and numbers, check them each and glance at the characters which you think look unpleasant. Try re-writing those characters again but this time, think of how you can make it look better with the writing technique you have. For instance, if your small ‘a’ looks bad, perhaps you can write it in a different manner wherein it will look a lot better.
Step 4: Writing Over and Over Again
Re-write the alphabet and the numbers again. Start slowly, then you can speed up a little later when you’re used to writing that way. Remember the characters you changed or redid.
You don’t really have to rewrite this over and over again in just one day. Try to re-write the characters at least twice or 3 times a week until you’ve got the proper way for your new calligraphy style. As days go by, you can write faster since you will be getting used to it already.
Step 5: Applying What You’ve Learned
After a week or sooner, when your writing starts to look better, apply this new calligraphy on a statement. Try applying what you’ve mastered in real sentence. On a sheet of paper, write “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog”. This statement has every letter from the alphabet that’s why this can be a great practice for you.
Writing everyday can help you improve your writing even more. Try to write as much as possible, whenever you have a chance. Also remember, most calligraphy looks good because of the clean way a person writes. The cleaner you write your characters, the better.
