Introduction
Most Americans are fortunate enough to enjoy an elaborate feast every Thanksgiving. However, there is a substantial number of homeless people, particularly in New York, who don't have the comfort of a warm kitchen to cook in or family with whom to share the holiday. It is easy for those of us with plenty to make Thanksgiving a little bit brighter for the homeless by helping to feed them a hot, delicious meal. -
Step 1: Volunteer
You can choose to spend your Thanksgiving (or the days preceding or following it) helping to expedite dinners for the homeless. The New York City Rescue Mission will host a week-long national event beginning November 23rd, complete with their 11th Annual Great Thanksgiving Banquet. http://isite156909.web08.intellisite.com/414556.ihtml. Call (212) 226-6214 or visit the Rescue Mission website for more info.- In addition to this major event, there will be other organizations offering Thanksgiving meals to the homeless, some of whom will no doubt appreciate an extra hand. Two other important organizations to contact are The Homeless Alliance of West New York or the Coalition for the Homeless.
Step 2: Donate Food
Perhaps the simplest way to help feed the homeless is to donate money or food items for Thanksgiving dinners. You can sponsor an entire table at the Rescue Mission's banquet for $1,000. If that is a bit too rich for your blood, remember that even the smallest donations make a difference. Simple gifts of traditional Thanksgiving staples such as canned cranberry sauce, canned veggie or boxed mashed potatoes may help an organization prepare their feast for the homeless. Contact individual churches or homeless advocacy groups to find out what items may be needed.Step 3: Keep Your Eyes Open
Have lots of leftovers after your big Thanksgiving feast? Walking home with a doggie bag after stuffing yourself at a restaurant? If you have extra food, keep your eyes open. You may just stumble upon someone who looks like they could really use some of your excess. Of course, this is not limited to Thanksgiving. Helping out the homeless you see with food is something that can benefit the needy and make you feel good about yourself at any time of year.
