How to Have a Catered Thanksgiving Dinner

Want to host an amazing Thanksgiving dinner, but don't want to spend your holiday slaving away in the kitchen? Relax on this holiday by having your meal or party catered. By letting others do the cooking, you will be able to focus on your friends and family rather than worrying about food burning in the oven. This guide will show you how to have a catered Thanksgiving dinner.

A home-cooked meal is always nice, but there is nothing wrong with having your holiday meal prepared by a professional chef. Hosting a dinner or party is stressful enough, even without the cooking! The steps below will help you plan a catered Thanksgiving feast that is sure to be a success.

Step 1: Do Some Planning

The key to a successful catered Thanksgiving get together is proper planning. Do the following at least a few weeks in advance, if possible:

  1. Set your budget
  2. Get a head count so you know how much food to order
  3. Find out about any dietary restrictions of your guests, such as vegetarianism or kosher habits
  4. Decide wether you want delivery or if you would rather pick the food up yourself (cheaper, but more of a hassle)
  5. Choose a caterer (remember that many grocery stores and restaurants offer catering service, so you are not limited to catering companies)

Step 2: Choose a Varied Menu

Once you have the logistics down, you will need to work with your caterer to plan the menu. Make sure that you choose plenty of options, so that you can please as many of your guests as possible. Remember to order at least one entree (although more would be recommended for a larger gathering), bread, plenty of sides and vegetable dishes, and a dessert or two.

  1. In addition to food, you will need to pick your beverages. Wine or spirits should be included if you have adults who drink in attendance, as well as sodas and/or juices.

Step 3: Set Up Space

At least a day before Thanksgiving, clear out enough space in your home to accommodate your guests and set up your meal. If you opt to serve buffet style, make sure that you have a large enough table or ample counter space to lay out your feast.

Before your guests arrive, set your table with chairs, plates, flatware, water and wine glasses, and any other utensils that will be necessary for the meal. By setting up beforehand, things will run more smoothly once your catered food arrives.
