Introduction
- Grape vines require annually pruning to keep them under control, but as long as you've selected a variety suited to your climate, they are not difficult to grow and care for at home.
Step 1: What You'll Need to Grow Grapes

- Grape plants
- Compost
- Peat moss
- Shovel
- A location that receives full sun
- A trellis or arbor to support the vines
- Pruning shears
Step 2: Plant the Grapes
- Grapes are deep rooted, so you'll want to loosen the soil down about 36 inches. Add compost and peat moss to the dirt you removed, and place the mixture back in the ground. Plant the cuttings in the ground, and water well.
- Position a trellis or arbor near the cuttings, and use it to support he vines as the plants grow. You want to make sure that all the leaves get full sun, so its important to keep the vines off the ground.
Step 3: Care for the Grape Plants
- Grape plants need to be pruned annually to keep them from getting out of control. You can prune 75-90% of the old wood from the vine without hurting the plant. Remove wood that's older than one year old, as the fruit forms on year old vines. The older vines will be rough, with ragged bark. remove any long runners to help manage the shape of the plant.
