Going to the Bathroom in Space
In this video, an astronaut explains how to go to bathroom in space. On earth, waste is pulled away from you by gravity. In space, it has to be pulled away by air and suction to avoid contaminating the air and making everyone on board sick. Space toilets also have seat belts so you don't float away yourself!

Step 1: Liquid or Solid Waste
On the space shuttle, liquid waste is dealt with differently than solid waste, so there are actually two different storage chambers. For liquid, a tube and a funnel with suction are all that's needed.http://www.ehow.com/how_5069587_use-bathroom-space.html Point the liquid into the tube and you're done. However, solids can be a little more complicated. -
Step 2: Strap In
For solid waste, you'll first need to strap yourself down to the toilet so you don't float away. Yes, space toilets really do have seat belts. They also have foot straps and a roller coaster-style restraining bar.http://www.ehow.com/how_5069587_use-bathroom-space.html If you were not tied down and could float away, it would create a mess as well as a health hazard, and getting sick in space is something astronauts cannot afford to do. -
Step 3: Turn on Suction
Once you're securely strapped in, you'll need to turn on the suction. On earth, gravity and water are used to pull waste away from you, but in space air is the only option. It may be windy, but it works. The air whisks waste away for storage and is then returned to the cabin after it has been purified so that no contaminants or bacteria (which create the smell) remain.http://science.howstuffworks.com/bathroom-in-space.htmResources Powered by Google
