Introduction
Aside from the time it takes to actually do the classes, going back to school as a single parent has never been more feasible. Current available grants due to high need areas and the growing need for college educated employees has made obtaining money to go back to school easier than ever. Parents should gather up their financial and educational information and prepare to make the first step towards going back to school, filling out the FAFSA. -
Step 1: The FAFSA
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be filled out by every college applicant before beginning school. This application helps the government and schools assess what grants and scholarships based on need that the student qualifies for. Potential students fill out this application using the information from their tax returns and educational goals to complete the questions. If the school has not been selected yet, potential students should put in a variety of school codes to ensure that the school they choose receives the information. This application takes a matter of minutes to fill out and can be done online. -
Step 3: Choosing Classes
Students who have been accepted will need to meet with a student adviser to decide which classes should be taken first. Students should keep in mind that federal financial aid requires that the student takes at least 6 credit hours in order to qualify for grants. Some scholarships have similar requirements. Students who are returning to school after a length of time away from school might want to consider only taking 6 credit hours in order to get used to being back in school before taking on too much. -
Step 2: Apply to School
Even students who do not know what their career goals are can apply to schools. Some schools even accept applicants who have yet to obtain their GED or High School Diploma. Students should fill out applications at schools that are accredited and meet their career goals. If the career goals are not yet known, then students can enroll with a major in general education until they know that the goal is. When applying to schools, single parents may want to consider attending an online university or a school that offers online classes for the convenience they offer in the way of eliminating any childcare costs for attending school. Single parents may also want to consider attending a community college as long as the credits will transfer to a four year college of the student's choice. -
