Introduction
- One way to conceal your hair loss or cover a bald patch is by getting a toupee. Once you have selected the toupee that's right for you, ensure that you know how to care for and apply it properly. An improperly glued toupee can cause embarrassment, as it will not only look unnatural, but it may also fall off at an inopportune moment.
Step 1: What You'll Need

- Toupee adhesive: Toupee adhesive comes in tape or liquid forms, which type you use is a matter of personal preference
- Your toupee
- Rubbing alcohol or witch hazel
- Cotton balls or pads
- A towel
- A mirror
- A comb or hair brush
Step 2: Prepare
- Especially if you're using liquid adhesive to glue your toupee, you'll want to make sure you're ready to place the toupee on your head directly after applying the adhesive. Gather the materials listed above, and then:
- Apply some rubbing alcohol or witch hazel to a cotton ball or pad
- Swab your head with the moistened cotton ball or pad. This will clean and remove any natural oils or residual toupee adhesive from your scalp to help ensure that the toupee adheres properly to your head
- Lay the toupee upside down on the towel
- Remove any residual adhesive from the toupee if necessary
Step 3: Apply the Adhesive
- If you're using adhesive tape, apply the tape around the outer edge of the toupee, along the rim. Ensure that the tape is even and that no tape is protruding beyond the rim of the toupee. Press the tape firmly in place and then remove the protective backing.
- If you are using liquid adhesive, dip the applicator brush into the bottle of adhesive. Use the brush to apply an even layer of liquid adhesive to the outer rim of the toupee. Be generous with the adhesive, ensuring that you have applied enough so that the toupee will adhere to your head.
Step 4: Place the Toupee
- Look into a mirror and get a good idea of where on your head you are going to place the toupee. Pick up the toupee gently, ensuring that you don't stick your fingers in the adhesive. Hold the toupee over your head, position it as you want it to sit on your head, and then place it firmly on your head. Using gentle pressure, press the toupee to your head, ensuring it is securely adhered to your scalp. If you're using liquid adhesive, wait a few minutes and then comb or brush the toupee hair into your desired style. If the toupee is crooked or does not adhere properly, remove it and try again.
