Most graduates don't remember what was said, or who spoke, at their commencement ceremony. Whether your goal is to be memorable, or just to get through the moment, there are things you can do to prepare to deliver a graduation address. Read on to learn how to give a great graduation speech!

Introduction

  • There are several stock platitudes that are used in graduation speeches, such as "spread your wings" and "you are the future." Great speeches go beyond these tired phrases and clichés, using words that inspire, motivate, and touch the graduates.

Step 1: Speak to Your Audience

  • As with any speech, if you can't connect with your audience, you're dead on arrival. You need to tailor your speech to your audience, using metaphors, references, and language that they are familiar with.
  1. If you're not from the town you're speaking in, read a few local newspapers to acquaint yourself with the local issues and concerns. Make sure to include the school paper in your research.
  2. Ask questions of a few students before you write your speech, to learn about their thoughts and concerns. What are the big issues on their minds?
  3. Review current events for the past four years, and include references to common experiences that have shaped the world during the time they've been in school.
  4. Don't be afraid to share your own history, and connect on a personal level.

Step 2: Keep it Brief

  • Most people have short attention spans. Additionally, no matter how prominent you are, the speaker is not the main event at graduation— the graduates are. Be concise and to the point, deliver your message, and leave the stage for those who've earned the right to march across it.

Step 3: Don't Be Boring

  • Combine any sober advice with a dose of humor and inspiration. Jokes and quotes can help you to season your speech. Although you may refer to serious themes, the general tone of the speech should be optimistic and uplifting.
