Getting your income tax refund from the state of New Jersey will require that you prepare the correct tax forms, file your return before the deadline and then find out when to expect your refund to arrive.

Step 1: Prepare a New Jersey State Tax Form

Complete your New Jersey gross income tax form. The Department of the Treasury advises taxpayers to check their math, to leave unused lines blank and to sign and date their form. Step 2: File the New Jersey State Tax Return on Time

File your New Jersey gross income tax return electronically or by mail. According to the NJ Department of the Treasury, electronic returns are free, accurate and yield fast refunds. If you choose to e-file your return, you can use the program NJ WebFile to do so for free. Step 3: Inquire About the Status of Your New Jersey State Tax Refund

The New Jersey Department of the Treasury does not have an online method to check the status of your gross income tax refund. To check your refund status, call the Automated Refund Inquiry System toll-free at 800-323-4400 from New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland. From all other locations, call 609-826-4400.
