How to Get Womens Rockabilly Hair

Rockabilly Haircuts

This article will address two types of rockabilly hair - short and long.

Short: If you are a dedicated fan of this era, then to really get the Rockabilly hair, you need a haircut that allows you to style it properly. The cut should consist of 4 inch layers all around and 3 inch framing your face just in front of your ear. Next, to get the Rockabilly hairstyle you must have curled hair. If your hair isn't naturally curly, you'll need to get it permed or curl it. This is a necessity to get the volume required to create this dramatic look.

Long: Two options - You will need a haircut with short layers in front around the frame of your face and long in the back. To get the Bettie Page look you will need to get bangs, with no part and brushed from the crown of your head forward. You'll also need a wave perm for the non bang portions.

Rockabilly is a form of music that combines rock 'n' roll and bluegrass. It arose in the 1940's and 50's and became very popular quite quickly. To get that rockabilly style, one of the most important aspects is to get that signature rockabilly hair. Read on to learn how to get women's rockabilly hair.

Introduction

Please be aware that this is a unique style that looks fantastic when done properly. However, it is not a wash and go type of style, it takes commitment and time. So if you don't have time to set aside when getting ready, this is not the do for you.

Materials Needed

  • Some method to curl your hair
  • Hair rats the color of your hair (optional)
  • Hair pins
  • Loads of hairspray
  • Soft bristle brush
  • Hair accessories, such as flowers with pins or barrettes.

Step 1: Part and Curl

See side column "Rockabilly Haircuts" before you begin. For Short and Long Regular Rockabilly Styles: (Non-Bettie Page Style) There are many variations of this hairstyle, so you must decide on a part, center or side...and then curl your hair. The curling is up to you. You can roll damp hair and let it dry, or use hair rats (found online or at hair salons) and pin the curls to your head. The look you want to go for is tube-like curls. Loosely roll small sections of your hair, and pin them at the scalp with hair pins. Let dry completely. When the curls have dried completely, brush them out with a soft bristle brush, Aa round brush works best. Allow the curls to move into a smooth and volumized wave.

Step 2: Styling the Front

Secure the back hair that you will not be working with yet. You must now decide on your style. One of the most popular styles is the tube like front. This is the one we will work through. This is done by teasing your 3-in layers forward and either rolling your 3-inch layers into a tubular shape, or using a hair rat, and pinning it along with lots of hairspray.

There are many variations as well, that all involve curling and pinning. With the side part, generally, spray to hold. With a center part, the most popular way is to take the 3 inch layers and curl them into tubular shapes and pin them behind the ears in a half up/half down fashion.

Step 3: Styling the Back

The back is simple, it can be left wavy, or you can style in into large curls or pin curls. You may leave it flowing or more popular, pin the curls to your head, this is totally up to you.
