Introduction
Getting a better rate is not difficult and it all depends on when you show up. Certainly, this includes making reservations, but is more based on your knowledge, and your ability to haggle and negotiate the price of your stay. -
Step 1: Do your homework
First decide when you will travel, and where. Narrow down what hotel you want to stay at, or at least what type of hotel you want to stay at. Next, find out what is going on in town that day. Look before, and after for a couple days. Bigger events mean less rooms will be available. No events means more rooms will be available and allows flexibility in pricing. If it is the middle of the week, pricing is more flexible. -
Step 2: Check competing hotels prices
Call other hotels, and even the hotel you are considering, and get average prices. Often, hotels in the same class will match prices. This also gives you an idea of the "Base Rate" Which, is usually listed in the computer at the hotel desk as the "Best Rate", so when you walk up to the counter, or call in and demand the best rate, they are not lying to you. This rate will do fine, as it gives you a baseline to haggle from. -
Step 3: See what discounts are available to you
AARP/Senior Citizens get discounts everywhere, about 10% Military/Government discounts tend to be about 5-10% Corporate discounts vary from 5% off, to adding 15%.These three discounts are available everywhere. And, as noted, Corporate is not always a discount. Since the 90's, when somebody wrote a book about it, people from all walks of life demanded the corporate rate. If you ask for it today, you are likely to get an inflated price, as true corporate employees have a negotiated rate already. However, Seniors rates and Military rates are always solid discounts. And sometimes, will be better than the rates you can negotiate yourself. But, note that you may only use one of these discounts as they cannot be compounded.
